There are three primary types of PDF forms, each with distinct characteristics and use cases:
1. AcroForms
- Traditional and most common type of PDF forms.
- Created using tools like Adobe Acrobat.
2. Static XFA PDF Forms
- Contain an XML stream with form field information, alongside the traditional PDF (AcroForm) structure.
- Can typically be opened and processed by non-Adobe viewers or tools that utilize the AcroForm structure.
3. Dynamic XFA PDF Forms
- Consist of an XML stream wrapped in a PDF shell, enabling dynamic display changes based on user interaction (e.g., field or button selections).
- Created using Adobe LiveCycle Designer or Adobe AEM Designer.
- Usually cannot be viewed or processed by non-Adobe viewers like Chrome or Safari, which may display placeholder warnings instead.
Notes on XFA Forms
- XFA forms (static and dynamic) are typically part of workflows involving Adobe AEM or LiveCycle Server installations, often utilized by government and large enterprise organizations.
